Education

The municipality has the responsibility for all but higher education, therefore operating pre-schools, compulsory schooling, and upper secondary and adult education.

Pre-schools ("förskola") welcome children at the age of one to five; almost all children of those ages in the municipality (Karlstads kommun) attend pre-school. At the age of six children enter the pre-school class ("förskoleklass"), which is integrated with primary school. Compulsory education ("grundskola") comprises nine school years, where children in most cases start school at the age of seven.

After completing compulsory education, students apply for admission to the upper secondary schools ("gymnasium") of Karlstad-Hammarö. Almost all of the standard curricular subjects are offered. Furthermore, citizens may attend adult education ("vuxenutbildning") for additional learning and specific examinations, or for degrees.

Karlstad University, with 10.000 students and located in the outskirts of the city, is financed by central government. The university is one of the largest in Sweden outside the traditional university towns. Karlstad University is strongly involved in international cooperation including research and student exchanges with 100 universities throughout the world.
